Upgrading to 1.13 from 1.4

Hello all,

I am trying to upgrade from 1.4 to 1.13. Any pointer, tricks and advices are greatly appreciated.

Is it a good idea in the first place or should I go in increments of 0.2?

Thanks in advance.

Make a backup!

The UPGRADE notes <
http://svn.wikimedia.org/viewvc/mediawiki/trunk/phase3/UPGRADE?view=markup>
have some information on upgrading old versions. Ordinarily you can just
upgrade directly to the latest stable release, but you could do the upgrade
to 1.5 first, since that part is probably the most likely to break.

I did a test run of 1.3something and 1.4 MW databases up to 1.8 and
1.9 about 18 months ago, and they didn't make a one-step upgrade
cleanly at all. I doubt it's cleaner going further to 1.13

I was advised at the time to try going to 1.5 and then from there try
the one-step. That eventually worked.

#$@$% customized intranets with #@$@$ local extensions that aren't upgradeable.

I made an upgrade from 1.5beta to 1.13 which did not work very well. I
had two dumps of the mysql database (with mysqldump and phpmyadmin). I
was not able to reimport both correctly. What saved me was an xmldump.

Try going from 1.5 to 1.6, then from 1.6 to 1.7, from 1.7 to 1.8 and
so on. It'll take longer, but it should work better.

It should *always* work to make a direct upgrade from the old version to
the new version. If it does not, that is a bug and we need to *find out
why* and *fix it*.

Making multiple upgrades with intermediate versions is *more* likely to
cause trouble, because the old intermediate versions might themselves be
buggy, or fail to properly work with your new PHP or MySQL version.

1) Back everything up first.

2) No, really. Back everything up first. :)

3) Run the updaters *to the current version* and *save ALL output* from
the updater script. Just running it a second time will *not* give you
the same information.

4) If you have problems, provide *all* of that information when seeking
help.

Re: Upgrading to 1.13 from 1.4 [In reply to]

Hello,

I have done an update from MW 1.3.x to 1.11 a few month ago. (It was a hard
trip ...) This is how it work for me (step by step and all from command
line):

* Update to 1.4.15 without problems, change LocalSettings.php according to
help:

from
$wgStylePath = "$wgScriptPath/stylesheets";
$wgStyleDirectory = "$IP/stylesheets";
$wgLogo = "$wgStylePath/images/wiki.png";

to this:
$wgStylePath = "$wgScriptPath/skins";
$wgStyleDirectory = "$IP/skins";
$wgLogo = "$wgStylePath/common/images/wiki.png";

* No the tricky part: To update from 1.4.15 to 1.5.8 I did this:

** first run Upgrade1_5.php. Should convert database from latin to utf-8,
but only links and special pages are converted, the content of articels are
still latin.
** Dump the database with latin1, open it with an editor (e.g.
TextWrangler), save it as UTF-8. Find and replace special characters (it was
german - äöüÄÖÜß, dash, accents ... I missed a few, so we had to change them
manually in the articel later ...)
** Import database as UTF-8
** run update.php
** change LocalSettings.php: wgDisableUploads has been replaced with
$wgEnableUploads

* Then it went on with no problems:
** Update to 1.6.10
** Update to 1.11.1

Kind regards, Raul
