Why a new forum software
I'm intensively watching the progress of your new forum software. I will have to enhance a webportal with strong community functionality within the next months. As far as I know you were using wwwthreads until you decided to produce your own gossamerthreads version.
What is the reason for that?
What will you implement that is missing within wwwthreads?

just my guess ... but, ...

I wonder if it had to with the fact that they were using someone else's product combined with a possibly man power increase in the office ... therefore, to further their market share and name value -- produce several new products that would allow users to choose all intergrated products for their site.

web-business, GT rather than IBM style Smile

There's also, according to some threads ... LinksPHP coming out and a community plugin to intergrate current SQL products.

I wonder if a banner software program is next? But it doesn't seem to be GT style of thing (I could be wrong though ...) What's in the pipes ... obviously more PHP based products ... hmmm ... shopping cart (plug-in) ...

Any body have any guesses ... not prying yet ... just wondering what the community thinks about the future mysterious release .... Angelic

Please note, what I have written is gathered from the forums only and not through any personal communications, I don't want to spread false rumors or make it seem I know something that I don't ... sorry if I butted in your thread.

Well, I think as it's been said, if you have your own software, you can do pretty much anything with it.

As I've said over the years, GT has been building a toolbox, which allows them to build new products, and integrate changes more quickly.

With all the tools, they can create an entire site/community program which is what I've been cheering for from the begining :)

Now, with w3t being sold to UBB, it makes even more sense for GT to have their own forum, without having to deal with 3rd parties.

Links/Database, Web Mail, Forum, and more can be integrated using the same "core" features, the same template tags, the same logic, the same developers. If you used w3t, their "template" system was very weak, and complicated. Upgrades were very, very hard. THe more you customized, the harder it was.

Links SQL is really easy to upgrade (as we have all seen -- sure, some problems, but in general, all mods/features upgrade with no code editing).

Integrating the products into a 'suite' of products sharing a central kernal, and user database, makes things easier from a maintaining point of view.

Hi Lars,

Sorry about the late reply on this. We have been asked this a lot, and I think the main reason has been mentioned many times. We are aiming to build an integrated set of products, something no other company can offer. You can go to a cgi directory and pick a good email system, a good directory, and a good forum, but when you try to put it all together and your users end up logging into three different places, it turns into a mess.

What we hope to offer very soon, is the final tie in that integrates the user authentication all together. Currently products share the same code base, same plugin system, same installer, same template system, same sql engine, etc. With Gossamer Community, we will give people the ability to tie the user database together with all our products (and have a flexible api for others to use it too).

I hope this helps, and if you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Cheers,

Alex

FYI, InfoPop will no longer develop or provide support for the PERL version of W3T. They're going with PHP. Crazy
