Adding new sites from IE toolbar...

Adding new sites from IE toolbar...
Hi

This is a mod I had working with Links 2 Flat version and it was very helpful for me and my editors...

What it does it create a search icon and adds it to the IE and netscape toolbar...

Then when the Authorized user is visiting a given web site (page) and he/she thinks it is good to be included he will just hit the add bottom:

The script then will:

1- add the site URL, and title from the page..

2- Grap the description from the description tag and if non will either spider the first X words from the page or just leave it blank.

3- look for e-mail address and add it as an owner and if not use default one.

4- Use webmaster as an owner name.

5- Selecting a category: the script MUSt be defaulted to a specific category (spider category or so).. and if the add bottom in for an Editor they can set this to their category..

After filling that form the script will forward the request to add.cgi where the link will be added to the database..

and display the add succes page to the adding person..

(User log in required must be set to no in the Links SQL setting).

That sounds like a very helpful plug in for editors, users and admin...

Does anyone have an idea or welling to develope such a plug in..?

If you need more info please let me know or just e-mail me webmaster@2muslims.com

I would be very very interested in seeing a plugin like this as well, and would be willing to pay. :)

I'd be most interested on a "user" level and would also like to see these features as well as the ones already mentioned:

1) Customizable graphic for the toolbar.

2) Search box on the toolbar (with a customizable URL, so as to be compatible with other plugins that may slightly change the search URL).

Any takers? Did I mention I had money? :)

How are you adding the icon to the toolbar?...through the registry?

My recent bookmarklet does most of this; feel free to play around with it. Some of your requirements are not realistic, such as getting the email (you can get it to fetch some email, but since most sites today hides away their email, because they don't want to end up in too many spam bases, and even if they do publish their email, who knows whether it is relevant)

I'm going to have a play over the next few days with a visual basic version that sits either in your status bar or in your toolbar and will popup a form that you can submit to add a new link.

Very interesting, I'll be watching this thread.

For those developers looking into this, Alexa and Google both offer this feature (minus the "Add Link" part), you might want to take a look at theirs for aesthetic ideas.

I'd also suggest making the "Add Link" available to all users, but to only allow auto-validate for admin and editors (of course).

The only grey area I see is that different sites use different fields on their add forms so I'd have to figure some way of either:

a) Building the form dynamically based on user settings - this may mean the app could only be used by admins and not general public
b) Making a custom version of the application for each client.

WOW,

a toolbar feature would be very great (like e.g. Google-toolbar).

No matter how the setup will work (plugin or standalone program).

I was looking for something like that about a year ago.

The only things I found where high-expensive (2.000$ to 8.000$) toolbars with no chance to change settings after purchasing one of this toolbar-solutions.

Just throwing out an idea that might be very useful, if it's possible.

On the Alexa toolbar, they have a list of "related" links. Maybe do something similar to this, but allow the administrator to select which are "related" by keyword or category or something. This would allow the admin to actually sell this advertising spot - I am sure you can all see the potential to have an ad placed on someone's browser toolbar as a "recommended" link! =)

Here is an early screenshot of mine....the fields you see are being generated dynamically using a def file so you would be able to include almost any field you wanted. The def file looks like:

TEXT:Title:50:Website Title
TEXT:Title:50:Website Title
TEXT:Title:50:Website Title
TEXT:Title:50:Website Title
TEXT:Title:50:Website Title

As I say, its just a really early idea of what it will look like (if I ever finish hehe) :)

O.K.

we are talking about some different issues!

What I meant (and like to have) is a designable IE-toolbar (like the google one) where i can put in my logo, my LinksSQL-SearchBox, a dropdown-list of quick_links (via my LinksSql-directory [jump.cgi]) and maybe some other button (e.g. Forum-Button=Link to my Forum).

After designing the toolbar, users should be able to download it and integrate it into their IE. I should be able to change the toolbar-links of the users' toolbars remotly.

So what I meant was exact the google toolbar (but designable and controlled by me).

Manu

Here's my visual representation (see attachment):

Ideas for implementation:

1) On Logo dropdown, allow above request to have links to specific areas of your site (i.e. I believe, forums, was mentioned).

2) On Search dropdown, allow search constraints (i.e. Search Only This Category, Search Only Category X - set by admin).

3) Details button goes to the site your on's detailed.html page at your website.

4) 8,221 Hits - shows amount of hits your site has generated for that link - or, better yet, its ranking in your LSQL database, based on hits.

5) Add - Allows a pop-up for users/editors/admin to Submit the Site to your search engine. Links generated by just "users" will, obviously, still need to be validated.

6) RecommendedLinks/Ad Links - Allows 2 or 3 links to be set by admin by keyword to be shown in the toolbar. These can be related links or PPC text link ads. On Mouse Over should say something like "Recommended Links" or value set by admin.

7) Highlight - No clue how this is done, but Google's toolbar has the function to highlight the keyword.

8) "Some Ad Or Feature Here" - Is exactly what it says. Either allow 1 more text link, or a banner image, or something else that one of you comes up with for the toolbar.

Anyway, I'm just the ideas person. Wink

GT Bar seems to be a great solution for me. I've checked www.pbar.net, they charge to much but have some more features. Yahoo toolbar, has annoying autoupdate. I, personaly, don't want my visitors to get as frustrated as I am from yahoo toolbar. www.toolbarwizard.com is a new player, they don't even yet have any help for their software, but it seems they have some good points over pbar and alexa.

Do you guys think it is worth waiting a bit more until GT Toolbar is tested enough, or it is already stable?

I find it the simpliest, perfectly fitting solution for me.

But still trying toolbars from all of Gossamer's competitors. (By the way: Thanks to Gossamer for providing a way to disscuss their software on the forum, unlike other that probably just hide bugs, and do not let clients interact with each other).

Are there anybody here who've tried all (or most) of the following toolbar creation software:

www.customtoolbar.com, www.toolbarwizard.com, www.iebar.com, www.123designing.com, toolbar.visicommedia.com, www.hexatech.com

I was preparing a report on IE custom toolbars to post on this site (features prices)... I hope this might Gossamer to make the best custom toolbars.

I'm currently playing around with the visicomedia dynamic toolbar. The big difference with theirs is you can have a ticker and rotating ads on your toolbar.

Yeah! Visicom has nice ticker. I'm currenltly playing with toolbarwizard web button. That IS cool. You have a tiny web page(s) right in the toolbar! You point that web page to your special URL, assing auto-refresh rate and you can have all you can have on regular webpage - flash (that's what I'm currently designing), marques with links (tickers), rotating banners (images or text)...whatever. hell of flexibility.

They'll have to give make a toolbar for me free because I've been spending bunch of time with their system because of lack of documentation, that's really annoying.

Will this feature be available in GT?
